Decker's parents relocated to Louisiana during the 1990s. Decker won a regional talent contest with her version from Patsy's I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart in the year she was only nine. Decker's family relocated from Louisiana to Georgia in the summer of 1995. Decker had begun writing songs and making frequent trips to Nashville in search of an agreement with a record label. Songs were sold to record companies and other artists through an agent from Big Yellow Dog Records agent at the age of 17. Decker's demos were passed through to L.A. Reid by Mercury Records President David Massey, who was at the time in charge of Island/Def Jam. Reid then agreed to sign Decker to a recording contract. Jessie James' first album, titled Jessie James and released in August 2009 was her self-titled debut. Jessie James, which featured Wanted as a top single on the Top 40 Singles Charts was moderately well-received. Decker always thought of herself as a traditional country artist however, the album's promotion and production was geared towards an audience more influenced by pop. Decker, who had been unhappy with two more singles released from the album, challenged the executives of the record label in search of better power. Decker then released her second single Boys in the Summer which is more than a country track. The second album of Decker's was announced with the title Daughter of a Gypsy, or Sweet American Dreams. Mercury had it shelved and three of her country singles performed poorly. The album was later canceled.
